Badass of the Week and Other Awesome Reads

March 28, 2011

Partially because I want to keep track of things I read on the internet that catch my attention and partially because maybe everyone doesn’t spend quite as much time on the internet as I do? I thought I’d share some of what I consider the most interesting, thought-provoking, funny, and/or exemplary recent writings online. (Caution, first and last link filled to the brim with profanity, if that kind of thing offends you):

Badass of the Week: Hideaki Akaiwa

Surrounded by incredible hazards on all sides, ranging from obscene currents capable of dislodging houses from their moorings, sharp twisted metal that could easily have punctured his oxygen line (at best) or impaled him (at worst), and with giant fucking cars careening through the water like toys, he pressed on. Past broken glass, past destroyed houses, past downed power lines arcing with electrical current, through undertow that could have dragged him out to sea never to be heard from again, he searched.

Diversity Check: Mommyblogging, Race, and the Digital Divide

Are minority moms using computers less? Is this a question of access? Or is it a matter of access to free time? Are Caucasian moms the only moms who can afford the luxury of time, or at least the time it takes to create and maintain a website? Are we so terribly post-racial that we can’t see acknowledge the gaping void where mothers of color should be?

An Open Letter To Good Morning America Concerning The Chris Brown Situation

But this was not a minor stumble. This was a well-documented, successfully prosecuted, and ADMITTED attack against a woman (not that the woman part really matters, if Chris Brown beat the shit out of a dude in a rented [lol] Lamborghini and then RAN OFF INTO THE NIGHT, LEAVING THEM FOR DEAD he would still be a horrific piece of shit and face legal consequences), for which this asshole has never even actually APOLOGIZED.

Have you read anything awesome lately?
